SOTD: The Decemberists – Hazards of Love
After being blown away by the folky beauty of the Decemberists at the Big Day Out I had to include them as song of the day. The difficulty with this, is the full CD is effectively one song, broken into pieces for convenience of listening more than anything
Anyhow, The Decemberists fifth CD, the hazards of love was released in March 2009, and was my exposure to this indie folk band (trying to generize is so much fun).
The hazards of love, features a variety of instruments (upright base, accordions, Bouzouki & 12 string guitars), varying tempo’s and genre’s all written around the common theme – a women called Margaret in love with a shape shifter, William.
Despite the fantasy themes, it is very listenable, and easy to get lost in.
This track – “The Hazards Of Love 1 (The Prettiest Whistles Won’t Wrestle The Thistles Undone)”, is the closest to a single on the CD, and offers a good introduction to the band/cd. However listening to one song, off an album (in the true sense of the word) doesn’t do it justice at all.
It starts of as a simple folk track, building slowly in intensity, before turning into the more upbeat “The Bower Song” (next song on the disk)
Listen, enjoy, and sample some more on myspace, and go purchase their cd.
