SOTD Hot Chip : Thieves In the Night
I like Hot Chip. People have always judged me for liking Hot Chip, it is cheesy, poppy electronic music, but I do. I really do.
My favourite electronic music is guitar based (my favourite rock music is electronic based for the record). I have spent many hours bopping along to all their classic songs – boy from school, over and over, hold on & ready for the floor. Cheesy, but wonderful music, for cheesy but wonderful moods.
The new Hot Chip CD, One Life Stand, is released February 1st, and as per our new modern 2010 reality a few songs have trickled out, building excitement and hype.
Hot chip are going in a new direction, it is very difficult to call them a dance band any more, while the usual electronic aspects are still there, drum machines, layers of synthesizers, but the BPM is way down. This creates a new more mature, mellower sound. It is far more Saturday afternoon listening, than music for listening to in the club (although I’m sure endless remixes will change that)
This song, Thieves in the night, is the first track off their new CD, it is a classic hot chip song, combined with their new deeper sound with all the feel good elements which made them so popular.
The vocals are more natural, stronger, and more defined. The synths blend in far more, rather than being the defining sound. The guitars are far more prominent, rather than being part of the rhythm section, as per previous CDs.
It starts very mellow, building in both tempo and intensity, with slower, longer verses, before coming into the chorus where Alexis sings “Happiness is what we all want”, switching from bridge to chorus and back again, when the full bands combines the full twangly power emerges.
Very different, but very good.
