Concert Preview: Camera Obscura & Slow Club 18/1/10
Tonight, despite being a quiet Monday night, I am very excited. I get to see one of my favourite bands play at my favourite venue (Bacco room, Auckland)
I have been a fan of Camera Obscura since their CD Let’s Get Out of This Country released in 2006. I love the indie pop sound, lead by Tracyanne Campbell’s powerful vocals.
This song comes from their previous CD, my personal favourite. Lloyd, I’m ready to be heartbroken, (apparently written in response to Lloyd Coles "Are You Ready to Be Heartbroken?") features everything that makes them great, the soft but powerful vocals, the melancholy synth sounds, all combining to make a beautiful pop song.
Camera’s obscura’s latest CD, My Maudlin Career, was released in 2009, starting to achieve mainstream success, as well as a best new music award from pitchfork. The leading single – French Navy, is available free from their website.
I am new to Slow Club, prepping myself for this concert was the first I had heard of them, but I am already a big fan. Their touching sweet alt country/twee songs feature great vocal plays between the 2 singers.
This track, off their CD, Year so, released in 2009 is a great example of what they are about, fun, poppy but full of emotion.
